The first time looking at this poem i simply thought it was about a person looking back at a summer of their childhood and wishing things could be as carfree as the used to be. The second time I read it, it spoke to me in a whole different way. It spoke to me about the concept of growing up. When your young everything is possible “when unicorns were still possible” and truth was never questioned. You beleived what you were told and nothing was impossible. It also shows that childhood was a time for learning “when the purpose of knees was to be skinned”. Like mistakes were supposed to happen so you could learn lessons that could carry with you for the rest of your life. And as a child you were supposed to get hurt or knocked down so you learn the importance of not only having the stregth to get back on your feet but also that there is always someone looking out for you. The poem also illistrates that when your a child you are put up in a “tree” or “bubble” away from the reality and cruelty of civilization and nothing could touch you. You were set back from taking responsibility for your actions because you knew there was always someone behind you to clean up the mess. “Far above and away from the softening effects of civilization”. This poem reminds me of my past because when I was young all I wanted to do was to be and be treated like a grownup. I wanted to do the things that grown ups did and know the things that grown ups knew. But now, as I make my way into my adult years, all i want is to be is a carefree child. I don’t want to take responsibility for my actions or worry about the things I do.

Even though i think that fluoride can be a positive and that we should add it to water I can see why others do not. Fluoride has very few safety test and since it’s only been around for a short time we do not know the long term affects of it. Studies have also shown that people who use fluoride can have just as clean and healthy teeth as people who have never used fluoride before in their lives so it shows that most of the time the results are not highly visible.
I go both ways when it comes to adding fluoride to water. It is a good thing because it is an easy way to help prevent decay by both reducing the ability of bacteria in plaque to generate tooth-weakening acids, and it helps put minerals back into tooth areas where acid attack has already begun. It also strengthens tooth enamel so when you get older and your teeth have had more exposure to different things your teeth would be a lot stronger and better at fighting off things then they would be if you had not used fluoride. Fluoride could also be a bad thing because there really hasn’t been a lot of research on the side effects of fluoride and for a long time it was considered a toxin. It also hasn’t been shown to produce extremely significant results so adding it to things might just be a waste of time.
In order to add fluoride saftley to toothpaste they had to make sure that the toothpaste was strong enough so that the toxins from the fluoride do not poison the user. They had to marry the fluoride with compatible abrasive which basically means that makers had to choose a mild fluoride type (sodium fluoride) which was used in most early toothpastes.
One of the many side effects from using fluoride in drinking water that concerns me is that the fact that it is a newly found drug and know one knows the long term side effects of it. Since it has only been active in toothpaste for a little over 50 years no one knows for certain what could happen if you use it all your life for 60 years! Another side effect of fluoride that scares me is that it is a drug and can cause many normal illnesses such as a stomach ache, headache, or weakness which are really common so if i did become serious people wouldn’t know what to do or how to treat it because the dangers of fluoride are not well known among doctors and researchers. Another side effect that worries me is that an overdose of fluoride can cause discoloration of teeth which could happen because we havn’t done enough reserch on fluoride so we don’t know exactly how much is enough.
